Endless racing thoughts, obsessive worries of the unknown,
and the inability to breathe.
Sometimes all you know when faced with anxiety is that you need a helping hand to heal.
Together, let’s create calm.
So, what is anxiety?
Anxiety is a full-body feeling of dread or doom that starts in the central nervous system and induces the “gut reaction” that something terrible is about to happen. Since it’s based in the nervous system, waves of anxiety—or even the more intense panic attacks—mean that nearly every aspect of your body feels as though it’s in crisis, inducing the fight, flight, freeze, or possum/”play dead” feelings and causing complete, chaotic overwhelm when you try to make decisions…and while just navigating your day-to-day life.
While it manifests in different ways for different people, common symptoms include:
- Chronic worrying
- Increased heart rate or heart palpitations
- Obsessive and/or racing thoughts
- Overwhelming fear of the “what ifs”
- Difficulty sleeping through the night
- Change in appetite
- Headaches
- Neck & back tension
- Stomach upset
- Fear of impending doom
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness in legs
- Feeling like you’re having a heart attack
- Feeling like you’re going crazy
The two most important things you should know about anxiety?
1 | It’s not your fault.
Anxiety comes in nearly every shape and size, whether it’s paired with depression, part of your OCD, or an after-effect of a big stressor like PTSD, or divorce. That said, no matter what your anxiety looks like or how it manifests, it’s no more your “fault” than if you have brown hair. Let the blame fall away, and let’s move forward.
2 | Anxiety isn’t a life sentence. (Not even close.)
Anxiety impacts some of the most raucously fun parts of life, from going to dinner parties to travelling the world. But when you need to push pause on your life list because of interfering anxiety, it may be time to consider grounding. Grounding is a fancy psych term that stems from learning to decipher the signals of your body. Once you crack your body’s code (so to speak), you can start relaxing while releasing the auto-responses from your body and mind. Breathe easy. More confidently. And finally, finally, trust yourself.
