Working with your Insurance

Good news! Although I am not in-network for any insurance companies, I do help you with getting out-of-network benefits for talk therapy (unfortunately, for MindBodyWise Yoga Therapy, insurance won’t cover you). It’s not so difficult and I’ll support you with the process from start to finish.

Why should you care?

In short, you save money and by finding out your specific benefits, you get to have control over the treatment you want, instead of having to choose from their limited list of providers.

Most insurance plans, even HMO plans, will allow you to get reimbursed for out-of-network providers (ones like me!), so you don’t have to pay the full amount to get the help you need. Since each insurance company is different and each plan is different, you’ll need to call your insurance company to find out what you get back for each session.

Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered.

Following is a list of what you’ll need to ask and what they’ll probably ask you to provide. Be sure to write down the answers and then contact me so we can go over it together.

You’ll want to ask the following questions:

  1. Do you provide out-of-network reimbursement for out-patient mental health?
  2. Is there a deductible?*
  3. Is there a session limit?
  4. How much do you reimburse per session?
  5. Is there an out-of-pocket maximum? If there is an out-of-pocket maximum, I can explain to you what this means – so be sure to let me know!
  6. What do I need from my provider in order to get reimbursed (ie: a special form, an invoice, etc) and what needs to be included?

Note: They’ll usually give you a percentage of what they deem as “usual and customary” or “out-of-network allowance” – so be sure to ask for both the percentage as well as their “usual and customary” or “out-of-network allowance” rate. This rate varies based on different factors, all of which may require you to answer questions that have answers listed below.

They may ask you:

  1. What is the name of the provider and what is their license?
Answer: Rachel Shanken, Licensed Mental Health Counselor
  2. What is her address?
Answer: 345 Seventh Avenue, Suite 1201F, New York, NY 10001
  3. What is her license number?
    Answer: 004894
  4. What is her NPI number:
    Answer: 1073794996
  5. What is her tax Id number:
    Answer: 209562055
  6. What procedure code will she bill you for?
Answer: 90837 or 90834 (ask if both are covered or which one is/isn’t)

Once you’ve gathered all of your information, send me an email so we can schedule a call to go over everything together.

I know that working with insurance companies can be difficult and frustrating, but with support and once we have everything set up, it’s actually not so bad…and remember, it’s worth if you want to have control over your healthcare.

*A deductible is the amount you need to pay out of your own pocket before the insurance company will reimburse you.
