Enhance your Mind & Body with Science-backed Techniques

Did you know…

You can unlock the potential for holistic healing by tapping into a resource often overlooked – your body’s innate wisdom. This isn’t a fad or a gimmick – it’s a proven method supported by scientific research.

Here’s what you need to know…

Your body speaks its own unique language.

Hidden within you is a remarkable network connecting every part of your being – your fascia, a complex web of tissue enveloping your entire body. Scientists are just beginning to understand its immense significance: it serves as a hub for emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

Healing, whether physical or emotional, invariably involves your connective tissue, a fact often overlooked.

Consider these fascinating facts about fascia, often referred to as your “6th Sense”:

  • It interconnects every cell in your body, facilitating extensive communication.
  • With 7x more sensory receptors than muscles, fascia is highly responsive to subtle touch and gentle stretching when approached mindfully.
  • Your fascia possesses an intelligence so profound that it can detect when you’re not fully present in your body, emphasizing the importance of embodiment in the healing process.
  • Mastering the art of accessing your fascia with mindfulness can lead to rewiring your brain, improving mental health, and reducing physical pain.

Recent breakthroughs in understanding this “organ of communication” debunk the myth that healing requires mere positivity or verbal expression. Instead, it begins by attuning to your body in specific, embodied ways.

Remember, like any transformative process, instant results are rare. Yet, engaging with your fascial tissue offers a direct and promising route to lasting change.

Excitingly, studies demonstrate that brief, frequent practice sessions are more effective than sporadic, lengthy endeavors. This means you can integrate short embodiment exercises into your daily routine effortlessly.

Here’s a simple tool to get you started on your journey of self-healing…

Practice Tool: Allocate 5 to 15 minutes for this exercise.

  1. Begin by closing your eyes and conducting a brief body scan, noting physical sensations and emotional states.
  2. Roll up a yoga mat or a blanket lengthwise.
  3. Lie on your right side, positioning the roll under your leg, about six inches below your hip (targeting your IT band).
  4. Prop yourself up on your right forearm, allowing the IT band to sink into the roll. Focus on the sensation, breathing consciously.
  5. Rock gently back and forth, maintaining awareness of the sensation and your breath.
  6. Gradually move the roll down your leg, repeating the rocking motion with mindfulness.
  7. After completion, lie on your back and take a few conscious breaths, observing the changes in sensation.
  8. Repeat the process on your left side, remaining attuned to any differences.
  9. Conclude by returning to a neutral position and conducting a final body and emotional check-in.

Note: Full embodiment is essential for effective results. Avoid distractions and remain fully present during the exercise.

Your body holds the key to transformation. Embrace the journey towards healing and growth by harnessing its innate wisdom.

8 Reasons Why IVF is so Challenging

Understanding IVF Challenges: 8 Reasons Why
8 Reasons Why IVF is so Challenging

As difficult as this topic is for so many, acknowledgment of fertility struggles and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is vital for those undergoing it. 1 in 6 couples struggle with infertility yet this topic often lurks in the shadows of whispered conversations. Embarking on the path of IVF isn’t just a medical procedure – it’s a rollercoaster of emotions, a test of resilience, a strain on every layer of your life and a journey that challenges the very core of your being.

So, why is IVF so darn hard?

Some reasons include:

  1. Emotional Turmoil: IVF is a journey fraught with emotional highs and lows that can leave you feeling like you’re riding a wild wave in the middle of a stormy sea without a surf board, alone. From the initial hopefulness of starting treatment to the heart-wrenching disappointment of failed cycles, each step is accompanied by a whirlwind of emotions – hope, fear, anticipation, grief, loneliness (even if you’re doing it with a supportive partner) and sometimes even guilt. It presses on you to navigate a tangle of feelings with no clear end in sight and no guarantees.
  2. Physical Strain: IVF places a significant toll on your physical well-being. The endless rounds of injections, blood tests, and invasive procedures can leave your body feeling battered, bruised, poked, prodded, and sometimes violated. Hormonal fluctuations wreak havoc on your system, leading to mood swings, fatigue, and discomfort. And, let’s not forget the dreaded two-week wait (TWW) – a period of agonizing uncertainty where every twinge is dissected under a microscope of anxiety and every anxiety is then mentally shunned for causing increased stress that could contribute to a failed outcome. Circle back to #1 above (Emotional Turmoil).
  3. Financial Burden: For many people, the financial burden of fertility treatments add an extra layer of stress to an already overwhelming experience. IVF is extremely expensive, even when health insurance offers some financial support. Some of the costs include: consultation fees, medication costs, genetic testing, scans and blood tests, egg and embryo storage, thawing costs, required psychological consultations, out-of-pocket anesthesia, and so much more. The hefty price tag of each IVF cycle can feel like a heavy weight pressing down on your shoulders, casting a shadow of doubt on your dreams of parenthood.
  4. Time Suck: IVF can be an unpaid part-time job. Resolving insurance and clinic billing (which is often hard to decode and incorrect), locating tough-to-acquire prescriptions, arranging for pick-up or shipment of medications, commuting to and from the many appointments, taking off days from work to undergo and recover from procedures are many of the ways in which IVF stealthily robs your time. The cycle of emotional and physical struggle can feel like torture, where days and months are on repeat, with time being of the essence.
  5. Social Stigma: Despite the growing awareness and acceptance of infertility struggles, there’s still a lingering stigma surrounding IVF. Whether it’s the awkward questions from well-meaning friends and family, the subtle judgment from society at large, the divisive political landscape, navigating infertility is often an isolating experience. The pressure to keep up appearances can impact your mental health, leaving you feeling misunderstood and alone, not to mention exhausted from feeling a pressure cover up such a major internal struggle. Once again, circle back to #1 above (Emotional Turmoil)…and so the cycle of pain continues to loop.
  6. Grief and Loss: The journey of IVF is laden with a myriad of losses — the loss of control, the loss of familiarity, the loss of privacy, and the loss of what could have been. It’s a journey marked by the loss of connection with partners, friends, and loved ones as you navigate through the intricate web of emotions and treatments. There’s the tangible loss too – the embryos that didn’t survive to transfer, the heart-wrenching experience of miscarriages. Amidst these losses, there’s the also the loss of the idealized vision you once held of starting a family. When you first embarked on the journey toward parenthood, you likely envisioned a smooth path, devoid of the hurdles and heartaches that IVF presents. The contrast between what you imagined and what you’re experiencing can be crushing. There’s a painful reconciling of the gap between expectation and reality. The death of that fantasy is a loss in itself – grieving for what could have been, for the ease and simplicity you envisioned but never materialized.
  7. Confronting Unfairness: The unfairness can hit hard as you observe the haves and the have-nots in the fertility arena. While some people effortlessly stroll into parenthood, your journey is an uphill battle. You witness pregnancies sprouting up around you, some even by accident, while you need to plan every step of your fertility journey. There’s the heartache of enduring a grueling IVF journey, only to witness others sail through IVF with better outcomes. For some, finances pose no barrier, while for others, it’s a cruel block to their dreams of conceiving. The inequities are glaring, the mysteries perplexing, and the pain palpable. It’s just not fair.
  8. Prevailing Uncertainty: Perhaps the hardest part of the process is the uncertainty that comes with every step of the way. Despite the meticulous planning, obsessional research, experts at the helm, the endless prayers, and unwavering determination, there are no guarantees in the world of fertility treatments. Each cycle is a gamble – a delicate balance between hope and despair, with each outcome hanging in the balance. When the results of each step are finally in, whether positive or negative, it’s a moment of reckoning – a crossroads where dreams collide with reality, and you’re left to pick up the pieces and carry on.

If you’re walking the path of IVF, know that you’re not alone.

I, too, have been in the IVF trenches, white-knuckling through some very long years. Having a therapist who was IVF-competent and truly understood the complexities I was experiencing made a huge difference in my ability to manage the emotional upheaval of treatment and thereafter.

I have the privilege and honor of helping others who are in the same rocky boat that I was in some time ago. While everyone’s specific IVF journey is different, I have a deep understanding of the IVF process, the language, as well as tools to help you manage the IVF whirlwind. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for a complimentary consultation.

14 Body-Mind Fast Fixes and Tricks to Make your Life Better

body-mind fast factsThere are so many body-mind fast facts, fixes and tricks that quickly and effectively decrease pain and enhance your life.

Your body can overcome the command of your mind in powerful yet simple ways. It’s exciting to share a few quick tricks with you!

Some of the following facts may seem like questionable, and they are much like magic tricks to fool your brain, but rest assured that they are all legitimate.

  1. Alleviate heartbreak – Heartbreak hurts. As much as it feels like it’s all emotional, heartbreak isn’t only an emotional experience, it’s physical! Taking aspirin helps to alleviate some of the intense physical and emotional pain of losing someone you love.
  2. Boost your Memory, Reasoning Skills, and Attention – Chew gum for 10 minutes to increase your cognitive skills. Pick your favorite flavor and get chomping (this also helps with stress reduction as well)! Oh, but keep in mind the effects only last for about 20 minutes.
  3. Reduce General Physical Pain – When you experiencing physical pain, your brain automatically intensifies the pain when you look at it. The fix? Either don’t look or reduce the pain by flipping over a pair of binoculars so that instead of magnifying the visual site of your pain, it minimizes the view.
  4. Halt Panic Attacks – Feeling that dreaded feeling of intense panic (increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, deep fear for no known reason)? Fill up a wide bowl with ice water, take a deep breath and then dunk your whole face in it for as long as your breath will allow. This slows your heart which reduces the experience of panic in your body. Note: if you have any pre-existing heart conditions, do not use this suggestion.
  5. Decrease Throat Tickles – Try scratching your ear! Yep, you can scratch the itch in your throat by scratching your ear which is said to cause a mini-spasm reflex in your throat which relieves the tickle.
  6. Cure the “Music Virus” – Have a song stuck in your head, playing on a loop? Try this. Think of the end of the song, maybe even singing the end of the song out loud. After doing this, the song should stop repeating in your head, due to something called the Zeigarnik Effect, which is the science behind your brain disliking unfinished things and once you complete it, the brain can let it go.
  7. Reduce Stress Levels – Take a bite of a mango, which has a compound called linalool that is said to help lower stress levels instantly.
  8. Overcome a Toothache – Instead of going to the source, rub ice on the back of your hand in the webbing between your thumb and your first finger. One study found that this technique reduced toothache pain up to 50% as compared to using no ice!
  9. Become Fearless – If you notice that you’re facing some fear, here’s a simple, fast biofeedback tool that great for grounding you. Stand tall, put one hand on your stomach and one hand on your heart. Breathe normally. Bring all of your awareness to to your breath. Notice what it feels like to breathe in your body. Next notice your heartbeat. Stay present to whatever you notice. Just 60 seconds or should do the trick.
  10. Get Happy – Write down one positive experience you’ve had in the last 24 hours.  When you do this, your brain and body relive the experience and amplifies the effects of that positive experience, making you happier over all.
  11. Cool your Overheating Body – If you’re somewhere hot and it feels like your body is overheating, reduce your body’s temperature quickly by running cool water over your body’s “quick cooling spots,” which are also pulse points. Some of these pulse points include your wrist, the back of your knees, the inside of your elbow and/or the back of your neck.
  12. Postpone Peeing – Need to urinate and there’s no bathroom nearby? You’ve got a few interesting options here (aside from popping a squat somewhere in public and risking arrest). Either try scratching the back of your calf vigorously for a few moments, which is said to interrupt the message from your bladder to your brain, or think about sex (which also interrupts the “bladder full” message).
  13. Fix your Burn – If you get a light burn, instead of icing it – clean your hand and put light pressure on the burned area. It won’t cool the pain quite as quickly as ice, but this natural approach to healing the burn helps to avoid blistering because it brings your skin back to its normal temperature.
  14. Stop Feelings of Loneliness – Take a hot shower or hot bath. In a study of 51 people, immersion in hot water helped to replace the social warmth they felt they were lacking,  thus reducing their feelings of loneliness. Ok, so this may not stop the deeper reasons for your loneliness, but it can at least soften the immediate discomfort of feeling lonely.

Which of these will you try?
